A Lawmaker
Debra Brimhall Pearson is the author of Arizona's Safe Haven’s Law. This law prevents the tragedy of finding newborn babies on bus stop benches, public restrooms, or even in dumpsters because the mother was unable to tell anyone about the pregnancy. The law allows the mother to turn the baby over to the authorities with no questions asked, provided that the baby is less than 3 days old, is unharmed, and the mother doesn't return for the child at a later date. Texas was the only other state to have a Safe Haven law when Arizona passed their law.
Debra's passion for this common-sense law has motivated her to set a goal of ensuring that every state in the union has a Baby Safe Haven law. Debra wrote letters to governors and lawmakers to inspire them to create this necessary legislation. She wrote letters to newspapers, and searched out and stirred up voters to contact their Legislators and ask for this Legislation to be passed. Through Debra's dedication and commitment, all but 2 states have passed Baby Safe Haven laws; and these 2 remaining states will have legislation running through after the first of the year!

Debra has dedicated a lot of time to lobbying for laws to help improve society. Among the organizations which Debra has lobbied for include the NRA, the Arizona Chiropractic Society, and the Eagle Forum which Debra has been working with it on national campaigns since 1976.

She was raised in a hard-working family that was involved in ranching, construction, trucking, and logging. Her upbringing has made her very passionate about protecting Arizona's natural resources and has spent a great deal of time working in this area. Debra chaired and held hearings on is the Rodeo/Chediski fire that burned her family ranch in Pinedale and a large part of her Legislative District; impacting the lives of her childhood friends and family.
